Reign of Louis XIII

Louis XIII became king in 1610 and ruled until 1643, first under the regency of Marie de’ Medici and later with Cardinal Richelieu as his principal minister. The reign saw repeated noble conspiracies, conflict with Huguenot political strongholds and a determined effort to strengthen royal government. France also moved more deeply into the Thirty Years’ War and the wider contest with Habsburg power.

The reign matters because it reshaped the balance between the monarchy, great nobles, provincial interests and religious minorities. Richelieu’s policies did not create absolute monarchy by themselves, but they expanded the crown’s ability to control fortified opposition, direct war and punish rebellion. Court favour, patronage, espionage and personal loyalty therefore carried unusually high political stakes.

The Three Musketeers is set mainly between 1625 and 1628 and turns this political world into an adventure of competing royal households, secret correspondence and divided service. D’Artagnan and the musketeers serve Louis XIII while repeatedly colliding with Richelieu’s agents, and the story eventually reaches the royal campaign against La Rochelle.
