Set in France during the 1620s and 1630s, Richelieu: A Tale of France places private loyalty and romantic attachment inside the dangerous politics of Louis XIII’s court. Cardinal Richelieu dominates the political landscape: nobles test the limits of royal authority, factions form around access to power, and apparently personal quarrels can acquire consequences far beyond the people who began them. James builds the story around fictional characters who must navigate a world in which rank offers protection only while the crown or its minister remains favourable.

The historical background is the consolidation of royal government under Richelieu, including his struggle against aristocratic independence and organised Huguenot power. Rather than treating politics as distant scenery, the novel makes patronage, secrecy and shifting allegiance part of everyday survival. Romance and adventure develop within a court culture where a letter, an audience or an accusation can be as decisive as a duel.
