Book
Majesty’s Rancho
First published 1942
In 1932, the daughter of the ranching family from The Light of Western Stars returns from university to the New Mexico-Arizona border country and finds that the world she knew has changed. The ranch still depends on cattle and hard work, but rustling, organised crime and local corruption now threaten it in ways that belong as much to the twentieth century as to the older frontier.
Her return brings questions of loyalty and romance together with the practical problem of protecting the family property. The novel revisits a landscape associated with the classic Western while showing automobiles, new money and modern criminal networks pressing against the traditions of ranch society.
