A young man is sent into Arizona’s Mogollon country to build a long barbed-wire drift fence intended to control cattle moving across the range. The project immediately challenges people who profit from loose boundaries, rustling and the difficulty of proving where livestock truly belong.
As construction advances, opposition hardens into a struggle over land, cattle and authority. The fence becomes a physical sign of the transition from open-range custom toward more regulated ranching, and protecting it requires the protagonist to confront men who see the new boundary not as improvement but as a direct threat to their livelihood.
