A wealthy New Yorker travels west to visit her brother and is drawn unexpectedly into the life of a ranching community in southern New Mexico and Arizona. What begins as an encounter with a country she regards as exotic becomes more serious as cowboys, local rivalries and violence connected with revolutionary Mexico pull her into dangers she did not anticipate.
The border setting gives the romance a political edge. Armed groups and instability south of the line spill into ranch country, while the demands of land, horses and physical work challenge eastern assumptions about status and independence. Her attachment to the West grows from direct involvement rather than distant fascination.
