The story follows the queen and her daughters through a court where privilege cannot protect them from dynastic duty. Princesses Charlotte and Sophia face sharply limited prospects for independence, while the king's recurring illness turns family loyalty into a public political question. The novel places the emotional life of George III's family inside the constitutional pressures that led to the Regency Crisis and, later, the formal Regency.
