Marie Penthive of Chalendrey, a young Norman woman, is abducted and carried to Brittany, where the politics of an eleventh-century feudal court determine the course of her life. Her feelings for Tiarnan of Talensac are complicated by his marriage and by the rivalries surrounding land, inheritance and noble authority.

When Tiarnan disappears and his supposed widow moves to control his estates, Marie becomes determined to discover what happened to him. Bradshaw adapts the medieval werewolf tradition behind Marie de France’s lai Bisclavret into a historical fantasy that combines romance and supernatural transformation with the harsher realities of lordship, marriage and dependence in high-medieval Brittany.
