The severe plague outbreak around James’s accession and coronation is historical, as are James, Anne of Denmark and Cecil. The particular crimes and Ned Savage’s role are fictional. Veerapen uses the unsettled early Jacobean capital as the setting for the second Spycatcher novel rather than treating royal ceremony as insulated from disease and urban fear.
