Elizabeth I Smallpox & Succession Crisis

In October 1562 Elizabeth I fell seriously ill with smallpox at Hampton Court. For several days her survival was uncertain, forcing the Privy Council to confront the fact that the queen was unmarried, childless and had never formally settled the succession.

The crisis sharpened rivalry among possible claimants and made clear how easily a royal illness could become a constitutional emergency. Elizabeth recovered, but the episode strengthened pressure on her to marry or name an heir and remained an important warning throughout the early years of her reign.
