The first Double Agent novel follows its fictional spies from pre-war Europe towards the outbreak of the Second World War, using the political reality of Stalinism, fascism and competing intelligence services as its framework. Stalin and Hitler belong to the documented historical setting; Cooper, Archie and the central conspiracy are fictional.
