Europe in the mid-1930s is becoming a battlefield of intelligence services before open war has begun. British writer Charles Cooper is drawn into Soviet espionage while another agent, known only as Archie, penetrates the British establishment on Moscow’s behalf. As Stalin’s purges intensify and Nazi Germany grows more aggressive, the loyalties of both men become increasingly difficult to separate from survival.

The first Double Agent novel follows its fictional spies from pre-war Europe towards the outbreak of the Second World War, using the political reality of Stalinism, fascism and competing intelligence services as its framework. Stalin and Hitler belong to the documented historical setting; Cooper, Archie and the central conspiracy are fictional.
