Tim Clayton and Phil Craig reconstruct the Battle of Trafalgar from the perspective of the men who fought it and the families who waited for news ashore. The book follows Nelson’s fleet as it closed with the combined French and Spanish force on 21 October 1805, explaining the strategic threat posed by Napoleon while drawing heavily on letters, diaries and memoirs to recreate the confusion and violence aboard individual ships.

The story continues after the gunfire ended, when a severe storm struck damaged vessels, exhausted crews and captured ships off the Spanish coast. By treating the gale as part of the same historical event, Clayton and Craig extend the usual battle narrative into the difficult work of survival, rescue and loss. Nelson and Collingwood remain central commanders, but the book deliberately gives equal weight to lesser-known sailors and the domestic consequences of the battle.
