United States Civil Rights Movement

Black activists used boycotts, sit-ins, freedom rides, voter-registration campaigns and mass demonstrations to confront segregation and racial violence. Churches, student groups and long-established civil-rights organisations all played important roles.

Federal legislation in 1964 and 1965 prohibited major forms of discrimination and protected voting rights, although enforcement remained contested and economic inequality persisted.
