The Help

Jackson, Mississippi, from 1962 to 1964. Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson work as Black domestic servants in white households where affection, dependence and racial humiliation exist side by side. Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan returns from university determined to become a writer and begins recording the experiences of local maids. The clandestine project forces all three women to decide how much they will risk when employers, family members and segregationist custom can punish even private acts of honesty.

The novel places domestic labour inside the wider civil-rights struggle, showing how racial hierarchy is enforced through employment, housing, clubs, churches and the intimate space of the home. The assassination of Medgar Evers and the fear surrounding public challenges to segregation enter the narrative as documented historical events, while the central women and their book are fictional. The alternating narrators connect personal independence with the collective danger and power of speaking about life in Jim Crow Mississippi.
