Berlin Game
Bernard Samson, an experienced field officer in British intelligence, is told that London Central has been penetrated by a Soviet agent. His investigation takes him back to West Berlin, where he grew up and where old contacts still remember a different version of him. The search for the mole quickly becomes entangled with office rivalries and with Bernard’s uneasy sense that those closest to him know more than they admit.
Deighton makes divided Berlin both a physical frontier and a test of personal loyalty. Bernard’s professional instincts conflict with his family life as suspicions narrow, and the final revelation changes the meaning of his marriage as well as his career.
