Norman of Torn is raised as a master swordsman and outlaw without knowing the secret of his birth. His raids and loyalties draw him into the struggle between Henry III and the baronial opposition led by Simon de Montfort, where romance, revenge and disputed identity become entangled with civil war.
Set during the Second Barons' War of 1264–1267, the novel brings Norman into the struggle between Henry III and the baronial movement led by Simon de Montfort. Prince Edward and other historical figures enter a story of raids, castles and disputed allegiance in which the hero's hidden birth becomes inseparable from the civil war around him.
