By 1294 Edward I's conquest has replaced the independent Welsh principalities with royal castles, officials and English boroughs. Garyn now leads the mercenary company known as the Blaidd while resentment develops into open revolt.
The rebels remain divided, and a rumour claims that the sword of Macsen could provide the symbol needed to unite them. Garyn's search for the weapon places personal ambition inside a rebellion whose success depends on cooperation between rival leaders.
The rising associated with Madog ap Llywelyn demonstrates that conquest did not immediately erase Welsh political identity. Edward’s castles and boroughs strengthen occupation, but taxation and local grievance can still produce coordinated revolt. The legendary sword gives the rebels a symbolic focus, showing why resistance movements often need a claim to legitimacy as much as armed men.
