Thunder on the Right

by Mary Stewart

Jenny Silver travels into the French Pyrenees to visit her cousin Gillian and is told that Gillian has died after a car accident near an isolated convent. The explanation appears settled until a small detail—the colour of flowers placed on the grave—conflicts with Jenny’s knowledge of her cousin’s colour-blindness.

Her questions expose false identities, coercion and a plan dependent on the remoteness of the mountain valley. Stewart uses convent walls, storms and difficult roads as practical obstacles rather than mere Gothic decoration, while Jenny’s search becomes both a rescue attempt and a test of her own judgement.
