Clay Tremayne begins as a reckless gambler more interested in pleasure than responsibility. The Civil War gives him an opportunity to join the Confederate cavalry under J. E. B. Stuart, while his relationships with Flora Stuart, Chantel Fortier and Jacob Steiner expose the personal cost of military reputation.
The novel combines cavalry adventure and romance with a Christian conversion arc. Stuart appears under his historical identity, but Clay and the intimate incidents around the command are fictional reconstructions.
