Just as Edgar Finchley is preparing to propose to Mrs Crantell, his employers send him to Paris to discuss an inheritance with a client. There he befriends Robert, an English orphan living informally beside the Seine, and is drawn into the boy’s improvised exploration of the city. A fairground visit, a mistaken identity and an inept political abduction turn a professional journey into another unpredictable adventure.
Finchley’s growing responsibility for Robert changes the direction of his private life as decisively as the trip changes his view of Paris. The novel mixes gentle comedy with a portrait of late-1930s travel: Channel crossings, grand hotels, barges, public gardens and crowded streets encountered by a cautious English visitor. Its conclusion brings Finchley back to London ready to create a family rather than merely resume his old routine.
