It follows supporters of both Patriot and Loyalist causes as they managed farms and businesses, carried information, supplied armies, endured occupation and in some cases joined military activity directly. The book places individual stories within the wider social disruption of the war and considers how revolutionary rhetoric about liberty did—and did not—change women’s political and legal position.
