The third volume of England’s Medieval Queens covers the consorts of the later Plantagenets from Eleanor of Castile to Anne of Bohemia. War in Wales, Scotland and France, deposition, court culture and the growth of chivalric monarchy provide the political setting. The biographies show queens acting as intercessors, patrons, diplomats and dynastic partners while also facing hostility when foreign origin or family influence became politically contentious.
The volume treats royal marriage as part of government. Queens maintain households, distribute patronage, mediate disputes and embody alliances, while pregnancy and succession give their private lives immediate constitutional importance. Their experiences also show the limits of influence: popularity can disappear quickly when foreign relatives, expenditure or factional loyalties become politically contentious.
