Fifty Browning Automatic Rifles disappear from an American base in Northern Ireland, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower orders Billy Boyle to recover them before they can be used in a German-backed uprising. The possibility that Irish republican militants are involved forces Billy to confront the sympathies and assumptions he inherited from his Boston Irish family.
The stolen weapons lead to competing factions, secret contacts and a growing number of bodies. Billy must separate political conviction from criminal opportunism while determining whether the theft is part of an Axis intelligence operation or a private attempt to exploit the conflict.
