Legionary

The Legionary series follows Numerius Vitellius Pavo from slavery into the ranks and command of the XI Claudia during the late fourth-century crisis of the Roman Empire. Its main sequence begins on the Danube in 376 CE and carries Pavo through the Gothic War, the disaster at Adrianople, the uneasy peace that followed and the civil conflicts of the Theodosian age.

The novels combine frontier warfare, imperial politics and the bonds within a Roman unit. A prequel set during the Roman–Sasanian struggle of 360 CE supplies the earlier family history behind Pavo’s service, while the later books test whether a veteran can escape an empire that repeatedly demands his loyalty and sacrifice.
