On the eve of Waterloo, ambitious merchant James Trenchard and his family attend the Duchess of Richmond’s ball in Brussels. His daughter Sophia believes she has secretly married the aristocratic Lord Edmund Bellasis, but after Bellasis is killed in battle she discovers that the ceremony was fraudulent. Sophia dies after giving birth to their son, Charles Pope, whose existence is concealed.
Twenty-five years later, the Trenchards enter the fashionable new district of Belgravia, where Anne Trenchard reveals the secret to Lady Brockenhurst, Bellasis’s mother. Their efforts to help Charles draw suspicion from relatives who fear losing wealth and status, while servants exploit the families’ secrets. The struggle over Charles’s identity ultimately determines who can inherit the Brockenhurst name and estate.
