In the spring of 1918, Bess Crawford is working in an overwhelmed military hospital when she notices the body of an officer who did not die from influenza or battle wounds. Before she can report the murder, illness removes her from the ward and the corpse disappears among the uncounted dead. Recovering in England, Bess follows the few details she remembers and discovers that the killer is prepared to erase witnesses as efficiently as records.
The mystery uses the confusion of the influenza outbreak and the constant movement of casualties to show how easily a deliberate death could vanish inside mass mortality. Medical exhaustion, military bureaucracy and the vulnerability of convalescent soldiers create a tense investigation in which Bess must trust her own memory against an official absence of evidence.
