While escorting wounded soldiers from France, Bess Crawford recognizes the distraught wife of one of her patients in a London railway station. Soon afterwards the woman is found murdered, and Bess realizes that her brief glimpse may make her an important witness. Her attempt to understand what she saw draws her into a circle of officers, relatives and lovers whose wartime loyalties are far less straightforward than they appear.
Set between the Western Front and the British home front in 1917, the mystery explores how separation, fear and sudden bereavement distort personal relationships. Bess must remain impartial while confronting the unequal freedoms granted to soldiers, nurses and civilians, and while a killer begins to understand how much she knows.
