On Monterey’s waterfront, Doc runs the Western Biological Laboratory and serves as confidant, employer and reluctant benefactor to the people around him. Mack and the men of the Palace Flophouse decide to thank him with a party, but their first attempt collapses into chaos and leaves Doc’s home wrecked. The neighbourhood then tries again, this time with a more generous understanding of what he needs.

The episodic novel moves among sardine workers, shopkeepers, sex workers, drifters and collectors of marine specimens during the Great Depression. Steinbeck combines comedy and ecological observation with a refusal to treat poverty as moral failure, creating a portrait of a community held together by improvised work, exchange, loyalty and shared vulnerability.
