The Double Shadow

Britain, 1937. Arnold Ruben has built a memory machine inside a picture palace, creating a private world in which chosen moments can be replayed and pain appears to be kept outside. He intends the invention as a refuge for his daughter Amaryllis from family damage and the war clouds gathering over Europe, but the machine’s ability to preserve, duplicate and reshape experience makes memory itself unstable.

The story follows its characters from the anxious final years of peace into the destruction of the Second World War. Speculative technology is set against cinema culture, appeasement-era fear, wartime separation and bereavement, exposing the danger of replacing lived truth with a perfected recollection. The machine offers shelter from history only by distorting identity and responsibility, turning a father’s attempt to protect his child into a darker examination of love, control and the costs of refusing to let the past remain past.
