Robert Harvey is a British historian, journalist and former politician whose writing concentrates on military history, revolutionary movements, imperial power and international affairs. He spent nine years on the foreign staff of The Economist, rising to assistant editor, and later worked as a columnist and foreign-affairs leader writer for The Daily Telegraph. From 1983 to 1987, he served as Conservative MP for Clwyd South West and sat on the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee.
Harvey’s historical books include Clive: The Life and Death of a British Emperor, Cochrane: The Fighting Captain, Liberators, about the Latin American wars of independence, and A Few Bloody Noses, a reassessment of the American Revolutionary War. The War of Wars provides a large-scale narrative of the conflict between Revolutionary and Napoleonic France and its European opponents from 1793 to 1815, combining battles, naval warfare, diplomacy and political change. He has also written studies of modern Japan, Portugal, apartheid, communism and the development of global political disorder. His books are historical nonfiction rather than historical novels.
