Legion of the Damned

The Legion of the Damned series follows a fictionalised Sven and the recurring soldiers of a German penal armoured regiment across the Second World War. Porta, Tiny, the Legionnaire, the Old Man, Julius Heide and their comrades move between the Eastern Front, Nazi Germany, Italy, occupied France, Warsaw, the Balkans and the Finnish front. The novels were written in the listed order but do not form a strict chronological sequence, so campaigns and character histories sometimes overlap or conflict.

Hassel combines graphic combat, military punishment, black-market schemes and gallows humour to present war from the viewpoint of men treated as expendable by their own commanders. Adolf Hitler’s regime, the Gestapo and SS terror are repeatedly contrasted with the soldiers’ improvised loyalties and desire to survive. The books draw on Hassel’s claimed wartime experiences but incorporate extensive invention and should be read as anti-war historical fiction rather than autobiography or documentary history.
