Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire

1457–1539

Thomas Boleyn, Earl of Wiltshire, was a diplomat and courtier whose children Mary, Anne and George became central to Henry VIII’s court. He served on missions in the Low Countries and France and gained titles as Anne’s relationship with the king advanced.

After Anne and George were executed in 1536, Boleyn lost influence but was not himself prosecuted. He died in 1539, having witnessed the destruction of the family’s extraordinary rise. Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire was born in Hever and died in Hever Castle.

Tracy Borman’s The House of Boleyn gives Thomas Boleyn a central role as the courtier whose service to Henry VIII brings Mary, Anne and George into the royal orbit and turns family advancement into a struggle over queenship and succession. Amy Licence’s Dangerous Lady views the Boleyn household from outside as Thomasin Marwood is drawn towards Anne’s circle, while False Mistress places Thomasin between loyalty to Catherine of Aragon and the growing influence of Anne’s family. Alison Weir’s The Grandmother’s Tale looks back on the same dynasty through Margaret Butler, Thomas Boleyn’s mother, whose memories of Hever Castle are darkened by the execution of her granddaughter Anne.
