The truth threatens not only an individual killer but the legitimacy and future of a royal dynasty, forcing him to decide which oaths carry greater weight: service to the king, protection of his family or justice for the dead. The investigation establishes a fictional branch of the Mowbrays inside the documented crises of Richard II’s reign.
