New South Wales in 1820. Matthew Bradbury accepts a post as a police constable in a dangerous district of the former convict colony and is assigned to pursue a notorious gang. His investigation is repeatedly crossed by Nellie Chambers, an armed bounty hunter who claims that the criminals abducted her child.
Matthew agrees to help Nellie, despite doubts about her identity and the methods she is prepared to use. Their pursuit carries them through isolated settlements and contested country, where colonial policing, former convicts and personal vengeance blur the line between justice and retaliation, while attraction makes their uncertain alliance harder to control.
