In 1241, Mongol armies have shattered the defences of eastern and central Europe. A small company of Shield-Brethren, guided by the scout Cnán and led by Feronantus, decide that another defensive battle cannot stop the invasion. Their answer is a journey across the steppe to kill Ögedei Khan at the centre of his empire.
A second struggle unfolds in Rome, where rival factions contest the papal succession while news of the Mongol advance threatens the political order of Christendom. The novel combines the secret mission, the life of the Mongol court and the conclave into the opening stage of a collaborative alternate history of the invasion.
