Macedon, 356 BC. Alexander is born into the turbulent marriage of King Philip II and Olympias, a princess whose fierce religious convictions encourage her son to believe that an exceptional destiny awaits him. As Philip reforms the Macedonian army and extends his power across Greece, Alexander grows up among court rivalries, military discipline and the competing demands of his parents.
Tutored by Aristotle and bound closely to companions including Hephaestion and Ptolemy, Alexander learns to command cavalry, judge men and conceal his own ambitions. His courage at Chaeronea establishes him as Philip's likely successor, but a new royal marriage and the king's assassination leave the young prince facing enemies at home before he can begin the campaign in Asia that will define his reign.
