Battle of Berlin

The Battle of Berlin took place in 1945 as Soviet forces closed in on the capital of Nazi Germany. Street fighting, artillery, civilian panic, political collapse and mass destruction accompanied the final days of the Third Reich. Hitler died in the bunker as German resistance disintegrated.

Berlin mattered because it marked the military and symbolic end of Nazi power in Europe. It also began a new occupation reality that would divide the city and shape the Cold War.
