Journalist Henry Mooney tries to report truthfully as guerrilla war, reprisals and political negotiation bring the Irish struggle for independence towards a settlement. His work places him close to Michael Collins, Éamon de Valera and the competing factions of the movement, while his love for an Englishwoman forces the public conflict into his private life.

The Anglo-Irish Treaty ends one war but divides former comrades over partition, the oath to the Crown and the limits of the new Irish state. As the dispute becomes civil war, Henry must decide what honest witness means when each side claims the authority of the dead and political loyalty can make neighbours, relatives and old allies into enemies.
