Irish Revolution and Independence, 1916–1923

1916–1923 CE

Between 1916 and 1923, Irish separatism moved from the Easter Rising through guerrilla war, negotiation and civil conflict. The execution of the Rising’s leaders transformed public opinion, while the Irish Republican Army and British forces fought a bitter War of Independence that ended in the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

The treaty created the Irish Free State but accepted partition and a constitutional relationship with the Crown. Those compromises divided the independence movement and led to civil war between former comrades, leaving political and personal divisions that shaped the new state for decades.
