In the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth of 1682–1683, the impoverished nobleman Pan Gideon and the young warrior Yatsek struggle with family obligation, social rank and a love that appears beyond Yatsek’s reach. Local rivalries, quarrels over honour and the threat of violence within noble households shape their choices while King John III Sobieski prepares the Commonwealth for a renewed Ottoman advance. The prospect of war offers Yatsek a route to reputation that peaceful society has denied him.

As news from the Habsburg frontier grows more urgent, private disputes are gradually overtaken by the mobilisation that will carry Sobieski’s army towards Vienna. The novel ends at the threshold of the 1683 campaign rather than as a full battle narrative, presenting military service as both patriotic duty and personal escape. Its courtly romance and provincial conflicts lead into the historical moment in which Polish cavalry became central to the relief of the besieged city.
