Historical person
Kara Mustafa Pasha
1634–1683
Kara Mustafa Pasha was an Ottoman grand vizier and commander who led the 1683 campaign against Vienna. The failed siege and the defeat of his army by the relief force under John III Sobieski led to his execution and helped begin a wider Habsburg-Ottoman reversal.
Henryk Sienkiewicz’s On the Field of Glory is set in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth of 1682–1683. The impoverished nobleman Pan Gideon and the young warrior Yatsek struggle with family obligation, social rank and a love that appears beyond Yatsek’s reach.
