Michał Wołodyjowski withdraws from public life after the death of his fiancée, but his friends draw him back towards military service and a new marriage to the spirited Basia Jeziorkowska. Their domestic happiness is threatened by instability on the Commonwealth’s southern frontier, where Ottoman power, Crimean Tatar raids and internal political weakness place the fortress of Kamianets-Podilskyi in danger. Old companions including Zagłoba return as private loyalties once again become part of national war.
