Akhenaten was an Eighteenth Dynasty pharaoh who ruled in the fourteenth century BCE, first as Amenhotep IV. He promoted the cult of the Aten, founded the new capital Akhetaten at modern Amarna, and sponsored a distinctive artistic style before later rulers dismantled much of his religious programme.
In Michelle Moran’s Nefertiti, Amenhotep instead renames himself Akhenaten, elevates the Aten above the traditional gods and builds a new capital at Akhetaten.
