Antonio de Mendoza was the first viceroy of New Spain, serving from 1535 to 1550, and later viceroy of Peru. He consolidated Spanish colonial administration, sponsored exploration and printing, and directed the suppression of the Mixtón War while attempting to regulate conflicts between settlers, officials and Indigenous communities.
