Phase
16 September 1810
In the early hours of 16 September 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo called the people of Dolores and the surrounding region to rise against the colonial government. The appeal followed the discovery of a conspiracy centred on Querétaro.
Hidalgo’s rapidly growing force moved through the Bajío and turned a political revolt into a mass insurgency. The movement contained conflicting demands concerning sovereignty, race, land, religion and loyalty to the Spanish monarchy.
This context supports fiction about the opening of the Mexican independence struggle and the sudden mobilisation that engulfed central New Spain.
