Battle of Chillianwala
13 January 1849
The Battle of Chillianwala was fought on 13 January 1849 in dense scrub near the Jhelum. Hugh Gough attacked Sher Singh Attariwalla's concealed positions late in the day with limited reconnaissance.
British and East India Company units suffered severe losses, lost guns and colours, and became disordered in the difficult ground. Sikh formations also took heavy casualties but remained capable of further resistance.
The result caused political alarm in Britain and intense criticism of Gough's tactics. Both armies withdrew before the final concentration that led to Gujrat.
