Battle
22 November 1848
The Battle of Ramnagar was fought on 22 November 1848 on the Chenab between Hugh Gough's army and Sikh forces commanded by Sher Singh Attariwalla. The Sikh position used the river and its sandbanks to protect a bridgehead.
A British cavalry attack entered difficult ground under artillery and musket fire and suffered significant losses. Sikh troops later withdrew from the exposed bridgehead in good order.
Ramnagar raised Sikh morale and began the main northern campaign of the Second Anglo-Sikh War.
