John Hay was an American diplomat and writer who began his public career as a secretary to Abraham Lincoln. He later served as secretary of state, promoting the Open Door policy in China and negotiating during the emergence of the United States as a global power.
John Hay also held the offices or ranks of United States Secretary of State and United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. John Hay was born in Salem and died in Newbury.
