The Three Crowns
When James II succeeds Charles II, his Catholic faith and determination to expand toleration bring him into conflict with political and religious interests that fear a permanent Catholic monarchy. The birth of a male heir intensifies that fear by removing the expectation that the Protestant Mary will soon inherit the throne.
William of Orange and Mary become the focus of opposition to James. As invitations, negotiations and military preparations turn a constitutional crisis into invasion, the Stuart family is divided by competing claims of religion, inheritance and political necessity. The novel follows the events that culminate in the Glorious Revolution and the joint monarchy of William and Mary.
