Battle of Dunbar

The Battle of Dunbar was fought in East Lothian on 3 September 1650 during Cromwell’s invasion of Scotland. The English army had been forced back towards Dunbar and faced supply difficulties while the larger Scottish Covenanter army occupied strong ground. When the Scots descended and compressed their forces near the coast, Cromwell launched a dawn attack against their exposed right wing.

The Parliamentarian assault broke the Scottish formation and turned the engagement into a major victory. Dunbar opened southern Scotland to occupation, removed many experienced Scottish soldiers and commanders from the campaign and restored Cromwell’s strategic position when his army had appeared close to failure.
