Gaius Julius Vindex was the Roman governor of Gallia Lugdunensis who rebelled against Nero in AD 68. He supported Galba as an alternative emperor but was defeated by forces under Verginius Rufus near Vesontio and took his own life.
Although his revolt failed militarily, it helped trigger the chain of events that ended Nero’s reign and began the Year of the Four Emperors. Vindex served as ancient Roman senator.
